Johnson And Johnson, the makers of Risperdal, agreed to settle with a family from Mississippi. The family states their son developed breasts after taking Risperdal.

Risperdal is an antipsychotic drug, often used to treat conduct disorder, bipolar, and other mood disorders. It is used in both teenagers and adults. The plaintiff, identified as J.T, began taking Risperdal in March 2004, when he was 7, and developed “large, female-like breasts”. This was as a result of a hormone spike caused by taking Risperdal. The family claim he gained massive weight gain, which caused bullying from peers at his school.

Risperdal is manufactured by Johnson and Johnson and their subsidiary, Janssen.

Risperdal Can Lead To Gynecomastia

J.T was diagnosed with gynecomastia in May 2013. Gynecomastia is the abnormal growth of breast tissue in males. It is believed Risperdal may cause gynecomastia due to the chance of increased levels of the hormone prolactin. Prolactin stimulates female breast development. Gynecomastia can be a permanent change and often requires surgery to remove the breast tissue. Unfortunately, breast growth often comes back, even when the drug is no longer taken. It can also lead to lactation.

Reports of Risperdal causing breast development go as far back as 2001.

There is evidence that Johnson and Johnson knew of the risk of gynecomastia, but held key data from the FDA. Currently, there are over 18,000 lawsuits against Johnson and Johnson/Janssen and their drug Risperdal. J.T’s case was one of the 6,700 cases pending in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas.
